Breaking in a Horse
When you hear the saying that someone is breaking in a horse, do you think of cowboys bucking a horse around a yard until it stops? Now if you hear that someone is educating his horse, do you think of someone working calmly and quietly with a horse?
It is quite unfortunate that breaking in a horse has to contain the word 'break' because it makes us think about breaking the horses spirit, having it yield to us. That is not the way it should be. Going back not so many years, it was done that way. But fortunately, times have changed and it is no longer 1898 but 2008. I believe that we tend to understand the relationship better and appreciate it more than they did then.
Very unfortunately there are still a few people who thinks that they need that in order for breaking in a horse one has to break a horse's spirit, but that doesn't have to be the case. What these people must really begin to understand is that you will get a much better horse when you work with and educate your horse.
Most people in Hollywood and those who run workshops tend to believe that horse whispering is some kind of mysterious art which is unachievable by a common person. There is absolutely no mystery to horse whispering. It is all about understanding the behaviors of a horse and being able to read the horse you are working with.
A horse is a herd animal and has a basic fight or flight instinct. A horse is a beautiful animal and has no magic powers, so understanding these basic things will be having you well on your way to working with your horse.
Working with your horse is the main point I would like to get across as this is what forms the cornerstone of any good relationship between the horse and it's rider. Getting back to the question of breaking a horse in versus education, you will achieve greater things in little time by working with the horse's natural instincts.
