Dog, Cat and Horse Portraits
Animals have been the best friends of humanity for thousands of years, whether in the role of working partners or beloved pets. Indeed, the ancient Egyptians thought that cats were the earthly manifestations of the goddess Bast. Tombs were decorated with images of cats, which were prized not only for their beauty and friendliness but because they would rid the granaries of rodents without destroying or eating the grain. In China, cats were thought to be the reincarnations of loved ones and that was considered a step forward toward Nirvana.
Horses have also been long appreciated and loved by humans, aside from their capacity to work and help feed the family or race. Because of their strength and beauty, the ancient Greeks thought the centaur to have half the body of a horse, they represented the sun in India, and in China over 5,000 terra cotta horses were crafted with their riders for the emperor over two thousand years ago. Today we love horses as much as ever and breeders are even replenishing lines of these noble animals that have been diminishing over the past century.
Dogs, too, have always held a special place in our hearts. There are hundreds of specific breeds and thousands of mixtures. Dogs work for us, protect us, heal us as therapy dogs, guide our blind and deaf citizens and even save our lives as professional search dogs and as pets in our own homes. Dogs in Greek mythology were believed to guard the gates of Hades! From Boxers to Black Labradors, English mastiffs to Chihuahuas and mutts, there is a loving dog with just the right size and traits for everyone.
Our love of our animals has led us to put their images on mugs, plates, Tshirts, hats, keychains, even our personal checks! People in the later years of their lives even include their pets in their bequests to make sure that the pet has a comfortable life after their owners die. Images of animals can be found on caves used by the earliest form of humanity, in tombs and on ancient parchment and artifacts. Artists have included dogs, cats and horses in pictures of famous rulers and humble servants, in landscapes and even as the subject of the portrait. Nearly everyone has seen the famous painting of dogs playing poker or admired the magnificent portrayals of animals in the 16th century paintings by Rubens or by other artists throughout the centuries.
Today, more people than ever want their pets' portrait done by talented artists and spend anywhere from $150 to over a thousand dollars to immortalize their loved ones in oil paintings. Others patronize professional photographers, sketch artists, or artists specializing in charcoal or pastels. Just as we treasure our family mementos and images, so too do we hold our pets dear and want their images with us beyond their lifetime. Because animals rarely sit still for extended periods-although some cat owners would claim their cats are an exception!-a photo is usually taken of the animal and used to create the portrait. The more conscientious artists prefer to visit the pet in person as well as work with a photograph, to get an idea of the personality involved; those portraits often are the ones that truly capture a pet's personality.
Even those on a tight budget can have their pet's photo on their favorite coffee mug or on a magnet, thanks to digital technology. Our pets are such an integral part of us, giving of themselves so unselfishly that we naturally want have their images to share with others who may not be able to meet them. Dogs, cats, horses and so many other pets bring us pleasure and love, teach children responsibility and affection and affect our everyday lives in countless ways. It's little wonder that we want to carry their images in our everyday lives and beyond theirs.
